Stand Firm: Resources

This summer we will dig into Ephesians 6 and focus on the Armor of God. The purpose of our study is to walk in victory in the area of spiritual warfare. Each sermon will speak to the individual piece of armor Paul mentions in Ephesians 6. This will also bring a deeper understanding to the truth that while the battle manifests in the physical, it is first and foremost waged in the spiritual. So we must learn to fight at the spiritual level in order to see a true physical victory. By the end of the series we will see how the full armor works together to empower us to consistently walk in this victory.

To help you engage more deeply throughout the series, this page is filled with resources—from Bible reading tools and prayer guides to worship and book recommendations—all created to help you stand firm in daily life.

Reading Plan

Throughout the series, we’re reading through all six chapters of Ephesians together as a church. To get the most out of this study, we’re encouraging reflective reading—taking time to slow down, dig in, and let God’s Word shape you from the inside out. Take notes, write down prayers, ask questions, and invite the Holy Spirit to lead you as you read.

Prayers

We fight our battles in prayer. Here you’ll find a collection of guided prayers—like the Prayer of Armor, Refuge, and for Captive Thoughts—designed to help you stand firm and stay rooted in God’s Word.

Father God, today I “put on the full armor of God, so that [I] can take [my] stand against the devil’s schemes.” Clothe me with Your truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. Strengthen me to stand firm in Jesus’ name.
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” — Ephesians 6:11, NIV

Lord, I choose to dwell in Your shelter and rest in Your shadow. “You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Cover me and my household with Your wings of protection; keep every attack of the enemy far from us.
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” — Psalm 91:1-2, NIV
Sovereign Lord, I submit myself wholly to You. Empower me to resist the devil so that he will flee. Align my heart with Your will and make obedience my delight.
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7, NIV

Jesus, thank You that “the weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world.” By Your Spirit, I demolish every stronghold and “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Replace lies with Your liberating truth today.
“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, NIV

Father, I praise You that “the one who is in [me] is greater than the one who is in the world.” Fill me with boldness and joy as I walk in Christ’s finished victory. Guard my heart with the assurance that I have already overcome through Him.
“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” — 1 John 4:4, NIV

FAQs

Have questions about spiritual warfare? You’re not alone. Explore biblical answers to some of the most common questions—like what it is, who our real enemy is, and how to fight with truth and confidence.

Spiritual warfare is the ongoing conflict between God’s kingdom of light and Satan’s kingdom of darkness for the hearts and minds of people. It touches every arena of life, from our thought-patterns to societal systems, but it is ultimately a spiritual—not merely physical—battle. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” — Ephesians 6:12 NIV

Our chief adversary is Satan, “the father of lies,” whose goal is to distort truth and destroy lives, yet whose power is strictly limited by God’s sovereignty. “You belong to your father, the devil … When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” — John 8:44 NIV
Still, believers stand on a greater promise: “The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” — 1 John 4:4 NIV

Yes. The moment we trust Christ, God rescues us “from the dominion of darkness and [brings] us into the kingdom of the Son he loves” (Colossians 1:13 NIV) . That transfer makes us targets—but it also guarantees victory because “if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you … he will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” — Romans 8:11 NIV

Paul’s armor in Ephesians 6:13-17 pictures a lifestyle anchored in Scripture and dependence on the Holy Spirit. It begins with this call: “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” — Ephesians 6:13 NIV
At PHC we encourage daily “suiting up” through truth-filled repentance, faith-filled obedience, Gospel-filled readiness, prayer, and saturation in God’s Word.

Prayer keeps us connected to God and deploys heaven’s resources on earth. Jesus urged His disciples, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” — Matthew 26:41 NIV
Spirit-led prayer realigns our hearts, repels demonic schemes, and releases God’s power into everyday circumstances.

The Bible is both defensive and offensive: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword … it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” — Hebrews 4:12 NIV
Like Jesus in the wilderness, we silence lies by declaring truth we’ve memorized, meditated on, and obeyed.

Often it is subtle—lies about your identity, relational rifts, or cultural pressures to compromise. Paul wrote that we stay alert “in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.” — 2 Corinthians 2:11 NIV
Recognizing the spiritual source of these pressures drives us to resist with spiritual resources.

Absolutely. At the cross “having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” — Colossians 2:15 NIV
We now fight from victory, not for it—enforcing Christ’s finished work until He returns.

James gives the simple but powerful strategy: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7 NIV
Practical submission involves confession, accountability, fasting, worship, and replacing sinful habits with Spirit-filled disciplines.

God designed community as frontline defense. “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together … but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” — Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV
As Ecclesiastes reminds us, “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”— Ecclesiastes 4:12 NIV
